Our History

Temple Beth El has a long and storied history as one of the first and ultimately one of the largest Conservative synagogues on the south shore of Long Island. Our founders gathered in 1921 and 1922 to pray together and to articulate their vision and lay their plans for a grand synagogue to be erected on the corner of Broadway and Locust Avenue in Cedarhurst. By 1924, the current Sanctuary was completed and the first Rosh Hashanah services were conducted in the new sanctuary that September. On September 14, 1924, a formal dedication ceremony was held and was reported by the Brooklyn Eagle newspaper. On September 15, 2024, another re-dedication ceremony was held to mark the 100th anniversary of the sanctuary. At the same time, Temple Beth El was officially listed on the New York State Registry of historic buildings with a historic marker designation erected in front of the building.
